Care For Your Pen
With a little care, your new pen should
give you years of enjoyment.
Ballpoint
Resin is a sturdy material, but as with similar materials,
it has a tendency to crack if dropped on a hard surface. If the shine dulls
somewhat, after prolonged use, a good plastics polish and wax should restore
the luster to its original finish. When your pen runs out of ink, a Cross-type
refill is needed for a replacement. They are readily available at any office
supply store. To replace the refill, pull the cap end of the pen straight
off. The old refill can then be unscrewed and a new one inserted.
Rollerball
When an ink refill is needed, unscrew the writing tip and
remove the old one, being careful not to lose the spring on the top end.
A Schmidt ceramic tip refill is recommended for a quality writing experience.
The Schmidt 5888 refill is installed in your pen, as well as other fine
pens. It can be purchased where good quality pens are sold.
Fountain Pen
Fountain pen general use declined in the late 1940’s, with the introduction of the ballpoint, and has recently enjoyed a resurgence. Understanding how one works, will increase your enjoyment of your new pen...
Your pen comes with 2 methods of filling the ink supply.
The first is the standard cartridge. The open end on the cartridge is inserted into the small nipple on the back of the nib section. It must be then primed for the ink to start flowing. To do this, squeeze the cartridge until the ink starts to flow. Wipe or blot the end and you can begin writing. If this doesn’t work, squeeze again, until it does.
The second method is the piston converter cartridge. Insert the open end on the tiny nipple on the other end of the nib section. The black piston should be then screwed counter-clockwise until it reaches the bottom of the cartridge. Dip the nib, up to the hole, into your ink supply, from the bottle. Slowly twist the piston clockwise, filling the reservoir with ink. Wipe or blot the excess ink from the nib end. Screw the nib section back into your pen and it should be primed, ready to write.
It is recommended that when filled with ink, you store your pen, nib up, when not in use. That way the ink won’t dry and clog the nib. If it is not used for several days and does dry, just run it under lukewarm water for several seconds and that should solve the problem. For long term storage, you may want to remove the cartridge and clean the nib with water.
